On Sunday, May 1, a Congregational Meeting has been called by the Session in the sanctuary immediately after worship.  The purpose of this meeting is to elect Diana Waggoner as a Deacon and Susan Kawamoto as an Elder.  A Corporation Meeting will also occur to elect an honorary Trustee.

Does this look like Leonardo DaVinci’s painting of “The Last Supper”?  Well, it is, but it isn’t!  On Maundy Thursday, First Presbyterian Church presented “DaVinci’s A Living Picture of the Last Supper.” The picture to the left is this church’s presentation of the Last Supper.  This was an AWESOME worship service as we were privy to what the Disciples were thinking as they gathered together with Jesus in the Upper Room for the Last Supper.  Each Disciple, played by a member of the congregation, had a soliloquy where they expressed their thoughts regarding their relationship with Jesus and reflecting “Is it I” as the betrayer to the man they loved and respected, our Lord.  This was true to Biblical form, but instead of reading, we were fortunate to see words put into action on that fateful evening.  This Last Supper had costumes sewn by members of the congregation and also props.  The setting was very authentic.  This was a worship service that had one really thinking about that night over 2000 years ago. Jesus, portrayed by Pastor Jon,  led the congregation and Disciples in communion as Jesus would have done that night.  For more pictures of “A Living Picture of the Last Supper” please refer to the website’s Photos.

On Maundy Thursday, April 21 at 6:30 p.m., First Presbyterian Church will be presenting “A Living Picture of the Last Supper.” This production is based on Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting “The Last Supper.”  The twelve disciple soliloquies will proceed to express themselves immediately after hearing the Master say, “One of you will betray me.”  Whereupon each man cries out, “Is it I Lord?”

The idea for this production was originally suggested to Ernest Emurian in 1953 by a church organist in Petersburg, Virginia.  The drama made its premier one year later on Palm Sunday in Portsmouth, Virginia under Emurian’s direction.

A cast and crew of members of First Presbyterian Church will bring to life this famous painting. Holy communion will also be served.

The service will serve as a source of inspiration to those who see it during Holy Week.  Please feel free to invite all of your family and friends to this unique drama.  It is open to the public.  The production will be in our sanctuary beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21.  We hope you will share some of your time with us during Holy Week. You don’t want to miss this, and you will be warmly welcomed.

Saturday morning was cold and wet.  The Easter Egg Hunt was suppose to be in Turner Park, but the grass in Turner Park was sopping wet.  Is this the way to have an Easter Egg Hunt? Absolutely NOT! Easter Egg Hunts must go on, but in drier conditions.  So, we held the hunt in our church in Calvin Hall. Fun was had by all! Youngsters looked for eggs as they were carefully hidden inside the building. Parents helped open the eggs, and the boys and girls had a great time collecting their prizes.  The adults working at the Easter Egg Hunt enjoyed seeing the boys and girls having a great time.  Juice and finger food were provided as well.

A few weeks ago I began a sermon series on the names by which we know God, Jesus Christ, and the Holy Spirit.  Think about what it means to be named.  Nicknames tell us about a person, and the Old Testament and New Testament people were able to identify that which they believed, through naming their God.  God was identified early in our history as “I Am”, and Jesus as “God with us”, while the Holy Spirit is known as “helper”.  These are just three of the names by which we know our God.  There are so many other names by which God, Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit can be known to us, names which can have meaning to us as we seek to understand our faith.

The most important name we might know right now is that of “Savior”.   Jesus Christ IS our savior.  He was born as one of us, lived as one of us, was tempted as one of us, suffered as one of us, and died like one of us.  Anyone can do that, but only a Savior keeps the story moving, and does what we humans could never do: Resurrection!  Only a savior does what humans never could, bridge the gap between humanity and heaven, beating Sin and Death in the process.

Thank about this for a moment:

The conquering of Sin and Death by a human?  Impossible.
The conquering of Sin and Death by a Savior…. Now, that changes things.

All is changed through Jesus Christ and his death, and more important, resurrection after the grave.  In believing this message, we find an Easter Hope like we could NEVER know without our Lord, and our Savior, whose everlasting life we celebrate this Easter, 2011.  Find the Easter Hope that is waiting for you, and then share that hope with others this Easter.

In Him,       Pastor Jon
