First Presbyterian Church held its annual Rally Sunday on August 28.  This provided members and visitors an opportunity to see the programs and activities that are available for people of all ages. Various booths in Calvin Hall were available to show many of our main programs with an adjective following  each program.  For example, Sunday School helps to teach humility, Wednesday Night Downtown is a time for joy, Adult Education helps us to understand Jesus’ love that is in the Bible, Mission Trips by our senior high youth helps provide justice  in underprivileged areas, our Farmer’s Market provides generosity, and our Music program, which includes two adult choirs, is a form of faith.

Following the booth viewing,  a picnic luncheon was served and was followed with games in Niven Auditorium.  The games included a cake walk, shooting ping pong balls off a candelabra with a squirt gun, hula hoop toss over pink flamingoes, plus many more games.  Youth and even adults enjoyed the games.  Prizes were handed out to the youth as rewards for accomplishing the games.

You are invited to our Sunday School programs each Sunday at 9:00 a.m.  Classes for our youngsters are in Millard Hall, and adult classes are held in various rooms in Calvin Hall.  If you are interested in having your child attend Sunday School, please contact Doug Walters, our Direction of Christian Education, at 402-345-5383 or just bring your child to Sunday School.  If you are interested in the adult Christian Education programs, either show up at 9:00 a.m. or contact the same number as Doug and see what classes we are offering that you would be interested in attending.  Wednesday Night Downtown begins at 5:45 p.m. with dinner in Knox Dining Room which is located in downstairs in Calvin Hall with classes beginning at 6:30 p.m.  We hope you will find time in your busy schedule to join us.

On Sunday, August 21, First Presbyterian Church members spent time doing Mission work through the Step Out and Serve Omaha program. Thousands of people in Omaha were involved in this program today. The two areas that members from FPC worked in were our “A Hand Up Pantry” and the new soon to be “Community Center” on 29th and Leavenworth.  Much work was done at the community center as pastors and congregation members were busy gutting the inside of the building.

As this author was leaving the building after taking pictures, she met Bobby.  He introduced himself  and said, “I’m  just a street person.”   He was told he was more than a street person.  Bobby asked to have his picture taken.  His picture was taken and  he was really pleased with it.  The author asked if she could use his picture on the website and he said yes and was excited that this was going to happen.  He wondered what was happening to the building.  He was told that this building was going to be renovated into a community center and was invited to the building when it was done.  Bobby was excited to hear about this new addition to the Leavenworth area and said he would come.

God touches us in many ways, and because our church decided to Step Out and Serve Omaha, contact was made with one of God’s children – not just a street person.  Join us as we continue to renovate this building.  Contact the church office for the date people will work at the center, and look at the “Photos” on the website to see what others did on this very special day.  By the way.  It doesn’t take a special day to step out and serve.  This can be done everyday!  We look forward to you joining us.

The Annual Presbyterian Women’s Luncheon was Sunday, August 21. This was a time when members of the congregation gathered together to support the Mission work of the Presbyterian Women, which this year is Prevent Blindness Nebraska. A good time was had by all who attended the dinner, which was prepared by the Presbyterian Women.  After the luncheon, a presentation was given about blindness and what to do to keep your eyesight.  The number one thing to do is to see your eye doctor if one has any difficulty.  All proceeds from the dinner go to Prevent Blindness Nebraska.  If one has a pair of glasses that he/she is no longer using, they may be donated to the church for someone in need of glasses but can not afford them.  Feel free to drop your donated glasses off at the church office.  By doing this, you will help someone with vision difficulties.

Step Out and Serve: August 21

This month First Presbyterian Church of Omaha will be joining churches across the city as we Step Out and Serve after worship and the PW Mission Lunch on August 21st. Throughout the month of August, leading up to the 21st, we will be asking people to sign up to take part in one of the service projects we are participating in, so that we can get T-Shirts ordered, and brown bag lunches for the people who are unable to be seated at the PW Lunch due to overflow conditions.

We will have several mission sites here in Omaha that will hopefully allow anyone to serve in some capacity on that Sunday. We have some ideas we are still finalizing, but one of the options will certainly be working in our own pantry, for those of you who cannot be out in the warm late summer sun.

It is less important where we are serving, as opposed to THAT we are serving. We are called in Matthew 25 to reach out to all who have need, as if it were Jesus Christ himself who we are working with. This is a commission that we must take seriously, a commission to be the hands and feet of Christ in a world that all too often has only seen the hands and feet of a disinterested society.

Come and join us as we serve our neighbors and our city in sharing the joyous faith that each of us has come to know makes a huge difference in our lives. Step out and Serve on August 21st, and on many other days as well, and be the physical way that Christ shows his love to a people that desperately need to know that ‘someone’ out there cares about them.

In Him,

Pastor Jon
P.S. Perhaps you cannot be with us on August 21st. Consider joining us as we serve a meal at Neighbors United on Saturday, August 13th. If you are able to help, please call the church office and we will put you in touch with our coordinator for that meal.
