Spiritual Growth and Development

As a community we provide grow spiritually through the disciplines of Study, Prayer, Worship, & Meditation.

STUDY
There are several opportunities to study the Scriptures.

Small Group Studies:

  • A daytime group meets on the first Thursday of every month at 2:00 p.m. at Skyline Retirement Community in the Emerald Room to study The Beatitudes. If you are interested in this group, contact Mary McLendon at (402) 397-2894 for more information.  The leadership of the discussion rotates.

  • Starting September, 2010, the Presbyterian Women of our church are offering a Bible study on Revelation.  The venue for both studies will be at the church in Jenks Lounge.  The studies will continue on the second Tuesday and third Friday of the month.  The study guide entitled JOURNEYS THROUGH REVELATION, Apocalyptic Hope for Today was written by Barbara R. Rossing.  It is important to know that the messaage of  Revelation is, most of all, one of hope.  Revelation is full of mysterious symbolism.  Revelation is rich in songs of praise to God and Jesus.  Revelation takes us on a journey into the heart of God’s own dream for our world.  All women are welcome to join us  for this new study. If you have any questions, please contact  Nancy Jelinek (402) 332-7274.

  • Mary Circle - Second Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the Jenks Lounge with Melissa Davis asl circle leader and Nancy Jelinek as Bible study leader.
  • Esther Circle – Third Friday at 12:30 p.m. with Pat Hudson as circle leader and Dolly Wilson as Bible study leader.
  • After the studies, you are very welcome to stay and participate in the meetings to plan and organize the other missions of the Presbyterian Women (mission and service); but it’s not a requirement.

Sunday morning classes will be resuming soon at 9:00 a.m. in South Calvin Hall.  Join us every week or any Sundays you’re able to come.  Previous Bible study is in no way required for participation, so please don’t let that be a factor in limiting your participation.   Further informatiobn will be available at www.fpcomaha.org or by callling the church office at (402) 345-5383.

Membership Exploration classes:   For those who are anticipating joining the congregation at First Presbyterian Church,  please contact the church office at (402) 345-5383 to let us know about your interest.

Wednesday Night Downtown Study & Fellowship:    Wednesday Night Downtown is our midweek education program for all ages.  This is offered to members and visitors.  The program is  recessed until September, 2010.

Catechisms – Online Option from Presbyterian Church U.S.A.

The 210th General Assembly (1998) of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) approved catechisms for use in the church. Download these catechisms (in pdf) below:

PRAYER

Some prayers are memorized and recited, some are extemporaneous. They can be spoken aloud, whispered, shouted, or sung. We pray collectively as a congregation, as part of a small group, or privately. Some are long, and some are short. There are morning and evening prayers, before meal prayers, driving the car prayers, before tests and free-throws prayers, and anytime-of-the-day prayers. There are prayers of thanksgiving, forgiveness, praise, guidance, questioning, healing, and pleas for help. Some are eloquent and others are simple. Some are generalized, some are quite personal. Some are answered in a timely fashion and to our liking. Others test our patience and understanding or not answered exactly as we had planned.

The important thing to remember is that there isn’t a “wrong” way to pray. The power of the prayer doesn’t come from us. It comes from God, so communicating is the most important thing!

Like other spiritual disciplines, we can learn about prayer from Jesus.  (More)
