Discipleship

“Go, make disciples of all nations, and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” ~ Matthew 28: 19-20

In the great commission, Jesus gave a directive to his followers, telling them what they are to do after He is physically gone. That commission wasn’t just for the early believers, it didn’t expire. It still holds true for us today, we are still called to go, to baptize, and to make disciples. We have been Going into the world, and we have certainly been Baptizing, but I wonder if we have been Discipling?

Discipleship is above and beyond teaching, it is much more than what can be learned in a class, it is about living for Jesus and changing your life. Discipleship is about drawing nearer to God, seeking to be more like Jesus. Now, teaching is a part of discipleship, for if you want to be more like someone or something, you need to KNOW about what you seek to emulate.

Discipleship takes what we learn, what we can know, and then challenges us to use that internal knowledge to change ourselves to be more like the person God has called us to be. Discipleship is a process of growth that is never complete.

Are you learning about Jesus, or are you growing in Jesus?

We would like to offer a number of opportunities for you to grow in your faith:

       •    A pilot program on discipleship will be happening this fall with a small test group, we are hoping this will prove successful so it can be opened to more and more people.

      •     Our Crawl, Walk, Run program will return for the third time this fall on Wednesday evenings. Through these sessions you will be able to identify who God has made you to be, and then go forth and live your life as God has designed.

      •     We have a study on Prayer this fall that will run concurrently with our sermon series on Prayer. Through this study you will learn more about prayers in the Bible and how you can apply these to your prayer life.

      •     We still will offer our Bible study classes that can help with your knowledge of the Bible. These will occur on Sunday mornings and Wednesday late afternoons at the church.

I am so excited that these opportunities are before us this fall. The future of First Presbyterian Church of Omaha looks incredible as we seek to know more and grow towards our loving God. Won’t you come and be a part of these faith opportunities this fall.
